PostSubject: Trying to Conceive   Wed Aug 30, 2006 10:49 am

The average time (one half of couples) to pregnancy is couples <30 years of age is 5 cycles.
Intercourse every second day across the time of ovulation maximizes the likelihood for pregnancy. Ovulation occurs 12-16 days before the menstrual period. By counting backwards in the last 2 cycles, you can then "guess" when you are likely to ovulate in upcoming cycles.
Lubricants are poor contraceptives, but they do mechanically limit the ability of sperm to move. Avoid them if possible. A "natural" lubricant that does not harm sperm is "egg white".

After intercouse, remain in a lying-down position with a pillow under the hips or turn onto knees and elbows: either position for 10 minutes. (I have heard stories about standing on your head in the corner and even gravity boots if you prefer).
Ovulation detection kits monitor for the hormone surge that anticipates ovulation by 1-2 days.

There is no way to know that a male is fertile short of semen analysis. There is no way to know ovulation occurs short of an ovulation detection kit or basal body temperature record (20% of women with no ovulation have regular menses). There is no way to assess the anatomy of the uterus and fallopian tubes without tests (most commonly, an x-ray nam, eshysterosalpingogram). These studies are appropriate when pregnancy has not occurred in one year.

MYTHS, WIVES' TALES AND OTHER TRIVIA
You can only conceive in the "missionary" (male atop, lady on her back) position (untrue, they all work).
Bicarbonate douche (1 tsp baking soda in 16 ounces warm tap water) up to 30 minutes before coitus "neutralizes vaginal acidity" and according to Landrum Shettles' book increases the likelihood of a boy (unproven)
The male should abstain until midcycle (this actually is harmful because some males have a drop in sperm count when they have not ejaculated for > 4 days)
Boxer shorts and cold showers make men more fertile (the reverse, increased scrotal heat from athletic supports, hot tubs, working in a bakery does reduce sperm count but the benefits of cold are unproven)
Diet, exercise, beverages influence fertility (nothing improves fertility; excesses, especially alcohol and street drugs can harm fertility)
Fertility dolls and other symbols (usually harmless, and unproven)
The back seat of a '57 Chevy (uncomfortable and unproven)
Coitus att the top of tall buildings to increase gravity pull as you lie head-down (sperm swim; the role of gravity is small.)
Robitussin cough syrup to "thin cervical mucus secretions" (Popularized in Philadephia in the early '80s; does no harm in a dose of 1 tsp 3 times daily from cycle days 10-16 (assumes ovulation about day 13/14 of a 28 day cycle)
Herbal potions (most are untested; all are unproven. If you enjoy tea made with powder from an animal tusk or an extract of gonad, go for it)

Yes we were talking about that, We wanted two children and them to be close age to eachother so they can play together and stuff. And also we thought about the fact we tried for two years before I fell pregnant with Kasia and it might take two years again but if it doesn't then thats ok.

I know how you feel, Declan is nearly 12 weeks old and i would really like another one, but i have to think of everything else at the moment like money, work and the biggest one of moving house but hopefully not too long before i can start trying!

It's probably taking so long because you are wanting it so much and waiting. The first time was because you were not expecting it

Took 7 months with my second 4 with my third...My first was not planned. So it is always different.Just have to get there at the right time.
